Welcome to The Wright 3 Book Club home page!

Monona Terrace invites your students to read The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett… and then take on the challenge activities that accompany the story!

About the Book

The Wright 3 is a mystery geared toward readers aged 10–12. The plot revolves around three sixth grade characters that try to save Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House from demolition. Author Balliett presents themes of Wright’s unique brand of architecture, how humans connect to buildings, and the changing friendships and loyalties of sixth graders. The Wright 3 recently appeared on the Cooperative Children’s Book Center “Choices 2007” list.

About the Challenges

The challenges focus on architecture and particularly the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. They are designed to meet language arts, social studies, and math standards. (See a list of standards by clicking on the link at the bottom of the navigation bar). Each set of challenges revolves around the 3 central characters:

  • Petra – Language arts challenges- readers would respond to questions in writing, creating “journal entries.”
  • Calder – Math problem-solving activities, mostly based in geometry, some using 2-d pentominoes.
  • Tommy – Discovery activities in Social Studies and Science- As the finder, Tommy explores and investigates. These activities often center on visual literacy and require the students to form conclusions based on their observations.

Each challenge has been assigned points if you care to use those with your students.

Go to the Frequently Used Resources section to download the additional materials you will need to complete the activities.
